ROMAN IMPERIAL BLUE CHALCEDONY CAMEO ATTRIBUTED TO JULIO CLAUDIAN PERIOD, PROBABLY 1ST CENTURY A.D. A finely carved oval cameo in translucent blue chalcedony depicting a laureate Roman imperial ruler in right profile, traditionally identified as Emperor Nero (AD 54–68). The youthful emperor is shown wearing a laurel wreath and military cloak (paludamentum) fastened by a fibula at the shoulder. The portrait displays refined classical modeling, delicately engraved flowing hair, and a noble, idealized profile characteristic of Roman imperial glyptic portraiture. The cameo is preserved in a later high-karat gold pendant mount. An old loss to the upper left of the gem has been expertly restored with a shaped gold insert reconstructing the missing section of the laurel wreath and drapery, providing both structural stability and visual continuity while preserving the integrity of the portrait. The carving exhibits strong stylistic affinities with Julio-Claudian imperial portraiture and is traditionally identified as Emperor Nero, although the precise identity of the sitter remains open to scholarly interpretation pending specialist examination. Height: 4.5cm Weight: 26g
