A ROMAN BANDED AGATE IMPERIAL EAGLE CAMEO, IMPERIAL PERIOD, CIRCA 1ST-3RD CENTURY A.D. Banded agate, carved in high relief. A superb oval cameo masterfully carved in natural banded agate depicting the Imperial Aquila, the sacred eagle of Jupiter, standing frontally with wings fully displayed and head turned to the right, triumphantly poised upon a coiled serpent. The engraver has exploited the natural colour zoning of the agate with exceptional skill, contrasting the rich reddish-brown body against golden-honey wings and a luminous cream ground. The plumage is rendered with remarkable technical precision, the wings composed of crisply engraved overlapping flight feathers, each individually defined to create extraordinary depth, texture, and movement. The finely layered neck and breast feathers impart a sculptural vitality that reflects the hand of a master gem engraver. A powerful symbol of Roman imperial authority, military supremacy, and divine protection, the Aquila served as both the sacred bird of Jupiter and the revered standard of the Roman legions. The serpent beneath its talons reinforces the timeless theme of victory over hostile and chaotic forces.
