A ROMAN MARBLE CUPID, CIRCA 1ST CENTURY A.D. A finely carved marble figure of a youthful Cupid, depicted tenderly embracing a goose. The childlike god is rendered with naturalistic softness, his rounded cheeks, plump torso, and gently flowing hair embodying the classical ideals of innocence and divine playfulness. The sculptor has captured an intimate moment as Cupid presses the bird affectionately to his chest, a motif symbolising love’s gentle yet possessive nature. The marble has aged to a warm honey tone, with traces of ancient surface polish and minor weathering to the extremities. The back is equally well-finished, indicating the figure was conceived in the round, likely intended for a private villa or garden setting. Height: 12.5cm
