A GRAY SCHIST DISH OF A SEATED BUDDHA, ANCIENT REGION OF GANDHARA, 2ND/3RD CENTURY Of circular form, carved in high relief from grey schist, the interior hollowed to form a shallow tondo within which the Buddha is seated in padmasana upon a double-tiered lotus pedestal. The figure wears the monastic samghati draped over both shoulders, the folds falling in the deep, ridged catenaries characteristic of Gandharan workshop practice, with the drapery spreading laterally to fill the recessed field on either side of the body. The hands rest in the lap in dhyana mudra, the gesture of meditation. The head is carved in near three-quarter volume, with wavy hair drawn back into a topknot forming the ushnisha, arched brows, downcast eyes and a small, faintly smiling mouth. Behind the head the ground of the niche is dressed with radiating palmette or leaf forms suggesting a foliate nimbus. The outer rim is framed by a laurel or bay-leaf wreath bound at the cardinal points by small rosettes, enclosed between two twisted cord borders. The iconography places the figure firmly within the earliest tradition of anthropomorphic Buddha imagery. The dhyana mudra, the lotus throne, the ushnisha and the halo together mark this as an image of Shakyamuni in meditation rather than a narrative episode, a devotional type that emerged in Gandhara in the first centuries A.D. and became one of the principal formulations of the seated Buddha across Asia. The lotus pedestal, rendered here with two rows of pointed petals, signals the transcendent nature of the enlightened being, seated upon but untouched by the world. The laurel wreath encircling the composition is a direct inheritance from the Hellenistic and Roman visual vocabulary carried east in the wake of Alexander and sustained through the Indo-Greek, Indo-Parthian and Kushan periods; in a Buddhist context it operates as a garland of honour, translating a classical motif of victory and consecration into a frame for the meditating Buddha. The material is the fine-grained grey schist of the Peshawar basin and Swat valley, the stone quarried and worked in the monastic ateliers of the ancient region of Gandhara across what is today northern Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan. The stone lent itself to sharp, deeply undercut carving of drapery and hair, and it is this quality that made possible the sculptural naturalism, at once Indian in subject and Mediterranean in handling, for which Gandharan workshops are known. Circular dishes of this type, sometimes described as toilet trays or palettes in the earlier scholarship and now more commonly understood as small votive or ritual objects associated with the stupa cult, form a distinctive category of Gandharan production. Earlier examples of the type carry classical and mythological scenes such as Tritons, marine deities and drinking figures; the appearance of the seated Buddha within this format marks the assimilation of the older palette tradition into a fully Buddhist devotional programme. The synthesis visible here, a meditating Buddha on a lotus throne enclosed by a Graeco-Roman laurel wreath, is one of the most concise statements of the cultural crossing that defined Gandharan art. The classical frame does not decorate the Buddhist subject; it consecrates it, offering the viewer a visual argument for the dignity of the new iconography by dressing it in the honorific vocabulary of the Mediterranean world. This dish exemplifies the moment at which the Gandharan circular tray, originally a vehicle for Hellenistic mythological imagery, is turned to Buddhist devotional use. The retention of the laurel wreath and cord borders alongside the fully developed image of the meditating Buddha on the lotus places the piece within the mature phase of Gandharan production, when classical form and Buddhist content had been reconciled into a single, coherent visual language.30cm x 6.5cm
