AN EGYPTIAN ALABASTER JAR Predynastic–Early Dynastic Period, Naqada III – 1st Dynasty, Circa 3200–2750 B.C. Carved from banded yellow and cream alabaster, the jar has an elongated ovoid body tapering to a rounded base and rising to a slightly flaring rim with a neatly dressed inner lip. The surface displays the natural crystalline veining characteristic of the stone, with scattered patches of mineral accretion and areas of surface encrustation. The interior is hollowed with smooth, vertical tooling, visible at the rim. Stone vessels of this form were commonly produced in the late Predynastic and early Dynastic periods for the storage of oils, unguents, or other valuable substances, and were frequently placed in tombs as part of standard funerary assemblages.
