Li Shun’s Portrait series is an experimental inquiry into the nature of seeing and representation. The creative process behind the work is both ingenious and deliberate: the artist first produces a pencil drawing that imitates the negative image of a classic photograph, then re-photographs the drawing with a large-format camera of the same scale, ultimately generating a positive photographic image. The original drawing and the developed photograph are subsequently exhibited side by side. The two works presented here constitute a direct comparison between the “drawn negative” and the “photographic positive” of the same portrait. Through this circuitous process, Li meticulously reconstructs the photographic transformation from negative to positive, while prompting viewers to reconsider the essence of the medium itself. Is photography merely a tool for recording reality, or is it a medium capable of producing reality? The work leaves this question open, inviting reflection on the complex relationship between image, perception, and truth. Pencil on sketch paper; gelatin silver print
