It preserves Wang’s signature sense of irony and absurdity while amplifying the metaphorical tension of the original through a tangible, touchable form. The work’s central appeal lies in its use of a playful surrealist scenario to deconstruct power dynamics within gender relationships: the woman is objectified as a “flowerpot,” her value reduced to the beauty of the flower she contains and the state of being watered, thereby losing her subjectivity as an individual. The man, meanwhile, is simplified into a “watering can,” whose purpose is to provide resources to the “flowerpot” and define its value. The act of watering can be interpreted as a gesture of nourishment, yet it also implies a one-directional form of control and discipline—whoever holds the power to water ultimately determines the mode of existence of the one being watered.
