CHINESE CARVED VARIEGATED RED SOAPSTONE MODEL OF THE NINE-STAGE PAGODA AT WHAMPOA ANCHORAGE Early 20th Century Traditional tiered form, with incised and figural decoration. Constructed in several parts. Height 33". The Estate of Dr. William E. Strole, Jr. of Boston. Notes: The Whampoa Pagoda, also known as the Pazhou Pagoda and the Pa Chow Pogoda, is located on Pazhou Island in the Pearl River, Guangzhou (Canton). Although built in 1597-1600 as a Buddhist monument, it also served as a useful navigational landmark for merchant ships. It stands 194 feet tall.
