PAIR OF RARE CHINESE EXPORT "LE DAME AU PARASOL" PORCELAIN PLATES 18th Century After a design by the Amsterdam artist Cornelis Pronk (1691-1759). Central decoration of an attendant holding a parasol for a lady holding out her hand to birds in a marsh landscape. Cell border interrupted by figural and bird cartouches. Undersides with a ring of widely spaced cobalt blue insects. Diameters 9". The Estate of Dr. William E. Strole, Jr. of Boston. Notes: In one of the earliest documented instances of a European artist creating designs for the Chinese export market, "Le Dame Au Parasol" was one of four porcelain patterns created around 1734 by Cornelis Pronk under commission by the Dutch East India Company. Original pieces of this pattern were produced primarily in the Imari palette of iron red, blue and gilt. The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects.
