CHINESE SCHOOL Circa 1810 Miniature view of the Canton waterfront, showing merchant vessels and pleasure boats in the harbor, and the merchant buildings and their respective flags along the shoreline, the American flag at the center. Note affixed verso inscribed "View of Canton Painted on Copper" and "From Capt. Little". Oil on copper, 3.75" x 5" sight. Framed 6.25" x 7.5". Notes: Marguerite Riordan suggested the depiction of a cutter sailing through a fleet of junks is typical of the work of Sunqua, but there are no records of miniatures by him. As such, she put forth Spoilum, Tonqua or their followers as other attributions. The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects.
