EXHIBITED: Large Ming Blue and White Guan Jar

This example was fig. 106 in the 1982 exhibit "Shadow of the Dragon: Chinese Domestic and Trade Ceramics", held at the Columbus Museum of Art, and authored by Kamer Aga-Oglu. Her entry essay: Porcelain with underglaze blue decoration; Ming, 15th century Ht. 11.75" This large jar or guan (Kuan) has rounded sides tapering to a slightly flared neck and foot. The widest band of decoration consists of the eight Buddhist emblems and lotus scrolls. A band of lotus petal panels framing flaming pearls encircles the foot; the shoulder has a scroll of double chrysanthemums, separated by a narrow band of ruyi lappets from the small chrysanthemum scroll on the neck. A bluish-white glaze covers the jar inside and out, except for the flat base with a slightly raised edge.
