The designation “Hōeidō edition” derives from the registered trade name Hōeidō of the publisher Takenouchi Magohachi, who was responsible for the publication of the greater part of the prints.The Hōeidō edition was Hiroshige’s first series entitled The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō (Tōkaidō gojūsan tsugi no uchi; Die dreiundfünfzig Stationen des Tōkaidō).
