Anonymous artist Japan, 19th c. 141/129 x 31,2 cm (143,5/132 x 34 cm R) Two fragments from a handscroll featuring three and two naturalistic depictions respectively of herons and a crane. Next to each bird is a red-bordered rectangular cartouche identifying the species by its exact name. 1)Three herons: a black-crowned night heron (goisagi 五位鷺／鵁鶄, Nycticorax nycticorax), a great egret (shirasagi 白鷺, Ardea alba), and another species of night heron (kōgoisagi 溝五位鷺). The first two birds are accompanied by short texts in kanbun giving alternative characters for the bird names and brief descriptions. 2)A grey heron (aosagi 青鷺, Ardea cinerea), whose short accompanying text lists alternative names, and a crane with black plumage (genkaku 玄鶴), a poetic term for a crane said to have lived for more than a thousand years. From the collection of the chemist, engineer and director of Merck & Co. Heinrich Georg Johann Harms (3.9.1906-28.6.1975) and his wife Eva Harms (10.11.1905-13.10.1998), largely collected in Shanghai between 1935 and 1942 - Minor wear, framed and glazed Anonymer Künstler Japan, 19. Jh. 141/129 x 31,2 cm (143,5/132 x 34 cm R) Zwei Ausschnitte aus einer Querrolle mit drei bzw. zwei naturgetreuen Darstellungen von Reihern und einem Kranich. Neben jedem Vogel eine rotumrandete rechteckige Kartusche mit dem exakten Namen des Tieres. 1) Drei Reiher: Nachtreiher (goisagi 五位鷺 鵁鶄、Nycticorax nycticorax, Silberreiher (shirasagi 白鷺, Ardea alba) und eine weitere Art von Nachtreiher (kôgoisagi 溝五位鷺); den ersten beiden Vögeln ist ein Text in kanbun mit alternativen Schriftzeichen für den Vogel und kurzer Beschreibung beigefügt. 2) Ein Graureiher (aosagi 青鷺, Ardea cinerea), der kurze Begleittext gibt die Alternativnamen an, und ein Kranich mit schwarzem Gefieder (genkaku 玄鶴, ein eher poetischer Ausdruck für einen Kranich, der über tausend Jahre alt geworden ist).
