In the style of Dong Gao (1740–1818) China, Qing Dynasty 129 x 73 cm / 135 x 79 cm Shakyamuni Buddha standing on lotus petals. Framed, 129 x 73 cm, gold pigment on dark blue-tinted paper. Artist’s signature: ‘Painted by the subject Dong Gao.’ An artist’s seal: ‘Painted with reverence.’ At the top centre, an imperial seal of the Qianlong Emperor (1736-1795): ‘Imperial inspection during the Qianlong era’ (Qianlong yulan zhi bao). Two further seals on the left and right margins, trimmed. Old private collection from southern Germany, acquired before 1990 Dong Gao was a Hanlin scholar, Grand Secretary, and painter and calligrapher at the imperial court during the Qianlong and Jiaqing eras. During the forty or so years in which he served as a close confidant to both emperors, he held numerous high offices. In addition, he served the Qianlong Emperor as a ‘ghostwriter’, meaning that many of the Emperor’s calligraphic works were in fact created by him. In the field of painting, he was particularly renowned as a landscape painter. The high esteem in which he was held at court is evident from the fact that, upon his death in 1818, the Jiaqing Emperor personally attended his funeral. He also likely created Buddhist figurative works, such as this image of the Buddha, for the court. Signatur des Künstlers: „Gemalt vom Untertan Dong Gao.“ Ein Siegel des Künstlers: „Ehrerbietig gemalt.“ Oben in der Mitte ein kaiserliches Siegel des Qianlong-Kaisers (1736-1795): „Kaiserliche Einsichtnahme in der Ära Qianlong“ (Qianlong yulan zhi bao). Zwei weitere Siegel am linken und rechten Rand, beschnitten. Alte süddeutsche Privatsammlung, vor 1990 gesammelt Dong Gao war Hanlin-Gelehrter, Großkanzler und Maler und Kalligraph am Kaiserhof der Qianlong- und Jiaqing-Ära. In den rund vierzig Jahren, in denen er als enger Vertrauter beider Kaiser tätig war, hatte er zahlreiche hohe Ämter inne. Daneben diente er dem Qianlong-Kaiser auch als ‚ghostwritwer‘, so dass viele von dessen Kalligraphien in Wahrheit von ihm stammen. Auf dem Gebiet der Malerei war er vor allem als Landschaftsmaler bedeutend. Die hohe Wertschätzung, die er bei Hofe genoss, zeigt sich darin, dass bei seinem Tod 1818 der Jiaqing-Kaiser persönlich an seiner Beerdigung teilnahm. Auch buddhistische Figurendarstellungen wie dieses Bild des Buddha hat er wohl für den Hof geschaffen.
