Imperial Court Robe with Dragon Motifs China, Qing Dynasty, Guangxu Period (1875–1908) (H. 138 cm) (defects) Made of bright red silk taffeta (as visible from the interior), decorated with a large frontal dragon positioned at chest level, with five-clawed paws, embroidered with gilt silver threads and polychrome silks. Directly beneath the dragon’s body appears a bat — symbol of longevity — holding a basket of flowers, flanked by two flying cranes. At the base, above foaming waves and the sacred mountain, are two confronted dragons gazing toward the imperial dragon. The entire field is embroidered in floss silk and couched stitch with clouds, flaming pearls, flying cranes, bats, and Taoist symbols, creating an apotheosis of the Emperor. The fastening and collar are formed by a blue silk taffeta band embroidered with a small frontal dragon and sinuous dragons in gilt silver thread. The wide sleeves are embroidered with the same motifs and feature a central dragon in the style of the chest decoration. The reverse is decorated with the same motif as the front. The fastening at the collar and along the right side is achieved through five silk cord frog closures and five finely chased gilt copper buttons engraved and repoussé with dragon motifs. An imperial robe similar to the present example, though in yellow silk, was sold at Christie's, Lot 1656, Sale 16320, 22 March 2019, for $125,000. For comparison with this type of robe and dragon decoration, see: G. Dickinson, L. Wrigglesworth, *Imperial Wardrobe*, London, 1990, pp. 32–33, pl. 23. J.E.
