Cylindrical celadon jade incense holder with lid, bearing a gilded Chinese inscription, the lid carved in low relief with an auspicious caracter China, Qing Dynasty, 18th century (h. 14 cm) (defects) The inscribed poem is “Night Mooring by Maple Bridge” (Fengqiáo yèbó) by the Chinese poet Zhang Ji, dating to the Tang dynasty (618–907 CE). The poem, composed of only four lines and twenty-eight characters, captures a moment of melancholy and nostalgia experienced by the poet, traditionally while traveling after failing the imperial examination. The sound of the Hanshan Temple (Hánshan Sì) bell, also known as the Cold Mountain Temple, is central, breaking the night’s silence and emphasizing the traveler’s solitude.
