Bundai, writing table, in Nanban style Japan, Edo period (1615-1868), for exportation (cm 20.5 x 63.5 x 39.5) (defects, losses on the aogai incrustations) The rectangular writing surface is set on a raised dais pierced on all sides, supported by a shaped and flaring apron with a scalloped profile, resting on four cabriole legs carved with foliate motifs. The whole is decorated in gold using hiramaki-e and kinpun techniques, with mother-of-pearl (aogai) inlays on a dark brown lacquer ground. The upper surface features a fanciful composition with a pavilion by the shore, rocks, and birds in flight among camellias, pine trees, and wisteria, framed by a floral checkerboard border; the raised edge is decorated with floral lozenge motifs. The sides and legs are adorned with insects and birds among wisteria and clusters of camellias, Chinese bellflowers, and mandarin oranges.
