AN UNUSUAL JAPANESE CLOISONNE 'KLAPMUTS' BOWL (2) Edo or Meiji Period, 1860s-70s In the manner of Kaji Tsunekichi, decorated in polychrome enamels of dark green, blue, red, purple and yellow with Chinese style scrolling foliate motifs and geometric patterns, the interior with plain blue or turquoise ground, the unsigned foot with purple counter-enamel, 8.5cm high 16.5cm wide, together with a carved hardwood stand raised on four supports 日本の七宝焼 This form is taken from earlier Chinese porcelain bowls made for export to Europe and known as 'Klapmuts' owing to the everted rim bearing resemblance to the slack brim of Dutch woolen caps of the same name.
