TWO CHINESE EMBROIDERED TEXTILE RANK BADGES OR MANDARIN SQUARES (2) 19th century Each Buzi woven in polychrome silk thread with exotic birds denoting rank, possibly goose or pheasant, mounted in black patinated glazed frame, 35cm high 37.5cm wide excl. frame 中国 補子 大清 丝绸 纺织品 Rank badges were used in the Qing Dynasty to denote civil service rank and were stitched onto official robes. Birds which face right as in this case were traditionally designed for females.
