Up for auction is a monumental and visually stunning antiquity of oriental flatweave art: A large Qashqai kilim runner from Southwest Persia (Fars region), masterfully hand-woven around 1900 or earlier. The flatweaves of the Qashqai nomadic confederation are world-renowned for their technical virtuosity and expressive symbolism. This rare showpiece captivates with its unusual, light inner field in an elegant sand and ivory tone. Across this luminous surface unfolds a vertical axis of diamond-shaped central medallions, powerfully flanked by monumental, stepped zigzag and hook motifs (Ashik variations). The dynamic patterning derives its vibrancy from the masterly interplay of vegetable-dyed madder red, indigo blue, emerald green, and warm earth tones. The composition is framed by a wide, striking main border with a geometric zigzag pattern, as well as delicate, multi-band minor borders. This textile work of art, well over 120 years old, is in an authentic, unrestored original condition. Reflecting its advanced age and nomadic use, the runner features some holes and authentic wear within the weave (see detailed photos).
