Up for auction is an expressive and characterful oriental rug from one of the most renowned knotting regions of Northwest Persia: An antique Heriz Karaja (Karadja), crafted around 1900. This rug captivates with its iconic and traditional pattern structure on a deep, midnight-blue inner field. The vertical central axis is dominated by three large, strictly geometric medallions typical of the Karaja provenance: The central, hexagonal medallion in a rich coral red is flanked above and below by two striking, shield- or star-shaped medallions in ivory and turquoise blue. The field is also richly interwoven with stylized floral motifs, geometric trees of life, and nomadic protective symbols. [1] This powerful composition is framed by a classic Heriz samovar border on a brick-red ground. The piece is characterized by the use of highly lustrous, durable virgin wool on a robust cotton warp, dyed with pure vegetable colors. The rug is in a generally good and, for its age, excellent condition with a beautiful, even pile structure.
