Up for auction is a prestigious and highly elegant masterpiece of East Asian knotting art: A large, antique Chinese Peking rug, masterfully hand-crafted around 1920. The rug captivates with its noble, imperially inspired design concept. Across a flawless, light ivory ground unfolds a minimalist composition of floating, finely drawn cloud dragons and stylized cloud bands. The motifs are executed in a high-contrast, deep indigo blue, lending the rug a wonderfully calming yet majestic aura. In the four corners of the inner field, artful, curved corner dragons frame the scenery perfectly. Particularly noteworthy is the wide main border, which surrounds the field with the traditional, continuous fret or meander pattern (meander good fortune symbol) in indigo blue on a light ground. The rug is characterized by an excellent, heavy material quality made of thick, lustrous cork wool. It is in an outstanding, good condition – the pile is evenly preserved, and the piece shows no worn-out areas.
