拍品描述

Ryoko (1777–1843) was one of the three famous Sanpitsu calligraphers of the Bakumatsu late Edo period. In this calligraphic copy of the Song poem, he uses the hidariban technique, a method of woodblock carving where the artist cuts away the paper where the brush strokes would be. When inked and printed, the background is in solid black, leaving the characters as the unprinted white of the paper. Text in Classical Chinese characters, in an orihon or accordion binding which unfolds to approximately 5.5 metres in length, and 12.5cm wide. With seal to the front in Chinese characters, stating, 'Viewed by the Emperor.' With a further seal to rear, which we believe to be Ryko's personal seal. In likely later wooden boards Provenance: Private collection, Japan. 品相: Worming damage to the paper, more so to front pages, not effecting legibility, but with sporadic worm holes throughout. The front board is entirely detached and the rear board is partly detached. A fragile item, but the pages remain in clean condition with no tears.
