Genroku 3, or 1693. Bound in plain wraps, Japanese stab binding, a small thick book. Six volumes bound in one. Pasted on title label lost. Block printed volume, printed on folded leaves. Some of the content based on the theories of Chinese physician Li Dongyuan, (1180?1252), who proposed that most diseases were due to injury to the stomach and spleen system, in traditional Chinese medicine. With numerous woodblock illustrations depicting meridian lines, human anatomy, and also with 36 hand coloured blocks, including some with only meridian lines in colour. Others show organs of the body in colour, including white plague of the lungs, and depictions of the liver, and kidneys. Okamoto (1654?1716) was a Japanese physician who wrote several medical texts, usually drawing on traditional Chinese medicine and Japanese observations. A set of five volumes in this issue was in the collection of the American Richard C. Rudolph, 1909-2003, Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures at University of California Los Angeles. In the catalogue of his collection, cataloguer Jeremy Norman writes: "in some fifty years of collecting early rare and interesting books on science and medicine in Japanese and Chinese, this is the only one Rudolph had ever seen in this field with these three desirable characteristics: on acu-channels of the viscera (including some imaginary and 'shapeless' organs); hand coloured illustrations in a medical work of this age; and a text so richly supplied with fine illustrations."15.7 x 11.2cm Provenance: Private collection, Japan. 品相： A water stain to upper part of front page, gradually receding to top margin over the first 26 pages.
