Various Formulas for the Assistance of All,' a scarce Edo period medical compendium, complete in 12 volumes in the first and only edition, no subsequent printings. Authors: Hayashi Ry?teki (1695-1731) and Niwa Seihaku, (1700-17520, medical doctors of the Shogunate. Publisher, Izumiya Gihe (Edo, Matsue Sanshiro), Kyoho 14, 1729. Commissioned by the Tokugawa Shogun?Yoshimune, a reform minded ruler who among other areas, sought to improve medical practice. A faded red Tokugawa government seal stamp to the supplied facsimile title page. Vol one deals with matters of the head, including zutsu (headaches), toso (boils or ulcers in the head) and hair problems including baldness. There are also chapters on issues with the mouth and tongue, such as kokkyo (fish bones stuck in the throat) and zesshu, swelling of the tongue. Volume 6 provides an overview of women's health, such as irregular menstruation, (Gessui fujyun), pregnancy, birth and mastitis. Herbal treatments are provided for many of the conditions.Bound in dark blue waxed paper covers, stabbed bindings. Seven chapters in 12 volumes. Vol one has a later high quality supplied cover page with reproduction title labels and bound in, a reproduction title page. Table of contents next to the title strip. Volume seven illustrated with 165 half-page sumizuri. Volume 12 titled "Yakuhin zukai"; with preface by Tachibana Shinken. A contemporary ownership signature to several volumes, usually the blank endpaper but some to the front blank. The books offer practical medicine for home use and emergencies with descriptions of medicinal plants and their uses. Much of the work draws on older Chinese medical texts, including the Materia Medica of Li Zi zhen (Ben cao gong mu) and Formulations for Emergency (Zhou hou jiu zu fang) by Ge Hong.22.6 x 15.8 cm.Scarce, with no available auction records in the West and only a few holdings in Western institutions. Provenance: Private collection, Japan. 品相： The paper covers have creases to the wax paper, with many of the covers rubbed and with small nicks to the edges. internally, there is occasional staining and browning, more so to Vol one, the rest mainly clean. Some worm holes to Vol one only. The stitching remains firm for each volume.
