A LARGE CHINESE GLAZED BUDDHIST POTTERY ZODIAC JAR, 14/15TH CENTURY.

Made from a red pottery and decorated with various moulded Buddhist motifs. Looking at the inner wall of the jar it can be seen that the clay, whilst still soft, was pushed into moulds held against the outer body. Some of these motifs are clearer than others and comprise the twelve zodiac animals, human figures, vajra (Buddhist sceptres) and lotus blossoms. The finial on the cover is in the form of a lion dog. The surface has been coated in a white slip on top of which is a thin lightly-crackled green glaze. To the underside of the cover and inner wall of the jar is a network of the traces of ancient root/plant growth. Early Ming Dynasty (c. 14th to 15th century). Height 38.5 cm. 品相： It is in good overall condition with no sign of repair to the actual pottery. The thin glaze has flaked a little in places, and there is also some touch-up of flaked glaze. There is a small chip to the inner mouth rim and a hairline crack to the edge of the cover.
