A FINE AND LARGE CHINESE NEOLITHIC POTTERY JAR, LIUWAN TYPE, MACHANG PHASE (C.2300 - 2000 BC).

Made from a fairly high-fired buff-coloured pottery, the surface colour varying in places due to uneven firing conditions. It is well-proportioned with its smooth round body, small circular base, wide loop handles, short neck and flared mouth. The upper body, neck and inside mouth have been coated in a brown wash on top of which is the decoration in fired-on mineral-based pigment. The geometric pattern features four large roundels spread equidistant around the upper body, each roundel filled with crossing parallel lines.Machang phase (c.2300 - 2000 BC) of the Majiayao culture, also known as the Gansu-Yangshao culture. Examples of Machang phase pottery of this type with the distinctive brown wash below the painted design, have been excavated from Liuwan village, Ledu county in Qinghai province and date to the middle of the Machang period.?Height 28 cm. 品相： Good condition with no obvious sign of restoration or repair. There is a tiny chip to the vulnerable rim edge and to the edge of one handle.
