A Chinese export silver gilt circular box and cover by Da Xing, late 19th century, probably produced for the Thai/Siamese market, the cover inset with a polished carnelian panel, the sides finely worked with dense flowers and leaves, stamped mark of Da Xing to base, total weight 703g, height 6.9cm, diameter 14.8cm. Note: Da Xing was a well-known and highly regarded silversmith working in Canton and Singapore during the second half 19th century. Given the large number and variety of silver items bearing the 'Da Xing' mark found in Thailand, it is likely that the firm had a subsidiary factory or sales outlet in Bangkok. Famous for his fine craftsmanship, Da Xing produced superior quality items for the Thai palace, as well as wealthy families in Malacca, and was one of few mainland Chinese silversmiths to produce silver for the Straits Chinese or Peranakan communities.
