7/9th Cent. Central Indian Madhya Pradesh sculpture in red sandstone depicting a regional Tantric form of (Naga-)Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of fertility, prosperity, and abundance. The figure is seated in lalitasana (the royal pose) on a double lotus blossom beneath a protective serpent hood and holds a snake in her left hand. Her right hand is displayed in varada mudra (the gesture of granting boons), holding a wish-fulfilling jewel. At the base is a kalasha (ritual vessel), a symbol of abundance, fertility, and prosperity. The goddess is flanked above by apsaras (celestial nymphs), by worshippers on either side, and by female attendants below. The sculpture combines elements of the yakshi tradition (female nature and fertility deities dating back to the Kushan period) with the iconography of Lakshmi as it developed during the Gupta period. De figuur zit in lalitasana (koninklijke houding) op een dubbele lotusbloem onder een beschermende slangenkap en houdt een slang in haar linkerhand. Haar rechterhand in varada mudra (gevend gebaar) waarbij ze een 'wensvervullend juweel' houdt. Onderaan staat een 'kalasha' afgebeeld : een pot als symbool van overvloed, vruchtbaarheid en welvaart. Zij wordt bovenaan geflankeerd door apsara''s (hemelse nimfen), aan weerszijden door aanbidders en onderaan door dienaressen. De sculptuur bevat elementen van "yakshi's" (vrouwelijke natuur- en vruchtbaarheidsgodinnen daterend uit de Kushan periode) als van de Lakshmi-iconografie uit de Gupta periode
