Umesh Varma (1935-2019) India, dated 1993 121 x 154 / 156,5 x 159,5 cm R. Flute player with two women and cow on red ground, acrylics on wood, framed, signed and dated in the lower right. From an old South German private collection, acquired in India around 1990 Umesh Varma was born in Uttar Pradesh in 1935. He studied at the art school of Delhi Polytechnic College from 1958 to 1963 and was already well-known as an artist in Delhi by the time he graduated. He founded the group “The Six” in collaboration with artists Jagdish Dey, Manjit Bawa, Nilmonee Chatterjee, and others. He has won several awards, including the National Academy Award from the Delhi LKA in Kochi in 2004, the AIFACS-Camlin Prize in 1984, and the Sailoz Prize in 1962. Er studierte von 1958 bis 1963 an der Kunstschule des Delhi Polytechnic College und war schon am Ende seiner Studienzeit als Künstler in Delhi bekannt. Er gründete die Gruppe "Die Sechs" in Zusammenarbeit mit den Künstlern Jagdish Dey, Manjit Bawa, Nilmonee Chatterjee u. a. Er gewann einige Auszeichnungen, u. a. den Nationalen Akademiepreis der Delhi LKA in Kochi 2004, den AIFACS-Camlin-Preis 1984 sowie den Sailoz-Preis 1962.
