A polychrome painted temple statue Korea, late Joseon Dynasty H. 37 cm The colourfully painted wooden temple statue shows a man sitting on a throne, presumably a guardian, with his hands intertwined in front of his body. An elevation reminiscent of a crown can be seen in the centre of the otherwise bald head. The facial features as well as the robe and its drapery and folds are finely and partly ornamentally carved out of the wood. In some places, the full luminosity of the coloured paint is shown in full bloom: the bold green of the robe contrasts with the rich red of the base. A votive chamber incorporated into the back of the figure can be seen. SüdGerman private collection, acquired before 2007 - partly damaged, drying crack on the reverse Tempelstatue aus farbig gefasstem Holz Korea, späte Joseon-Dynastie H. 37 cm Die farbig gefasste Tempelstatue aus Holz zeigt einen auf einem Thron sitzenden Mann, vermutlich einen Würdenträger, mit vor dem Körper ineinander verschlungenen Händen. Auf dem ansonsten kahlen Haupt ist mittig eine Erhebung, die an eine Bekrönung erinnert, zu sehen. Die Gesichtszüge ebenso wie das Gewand und dessen Faltenwurf und Bänder sind fein und teils ornamental aus dem Holz herausgearbeitet. An einigen Stellen kommt die volle Leuchtkraft der farbigen Fassung noch vollständig zur Geltung: Das kräftige Grün des Gewand steht dabei im Komplementärkontrast zum satten Rot des Sockels.
