A large sgraffiato jar with peonies China, Yuan/ early Ming dynasty H. 34 cm Heavily potted, ovoid-shaped vase with a short, upright neck. The wall is decorated in the sgraffito technique with a wide frieze of large peony flowers flanking a stem with large leaves. The decoration is executed in a thick black glaze, which has been left out on the red-brown body. The high-contrast decorations in black on light, which are created using the scoring technique (sgraffito), are characteristic for Cizhou ware. The peony as the main motif symbolises wealth and beauty and is one of the most frequently used floral ornaments. Die Wandung ist im Sgraffito-Verfahren dekoriert mit einem breiten Fries aus großen Pfingstrosenblüten, die einen Stängel mit großen Blättern flankieren. Das Dekor ist in dicker schwarzer Glasur ausgeführt, die auf dem rotbraunen Scherben ausgespart wurde. Charakteristisch bei Cizhou-Ware sind die kontrastreichen Dekore in schwarz-auf-hell, die durch Ritztechnik (Sgraffito) erzeugt werden. Die Pfingstrose als Hauptmotiv symbolisiert Reichtum und Schönheit und gehört zu den am häufigsten verwendeten floralen Ornamenten.
