A CHINESE BLUE & WHITE CENSER, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) Painted in underglaze cobalt blue, the globular body rises from a short, slightly splayed foot to a straight rim. The exterior is finely decorated with a continuous figural scene set before architectural screens, showing standing and seated attendants arranged in conversation within a garden pavilion. The figures are rendered in varied tones of blue, with detailed costume folds and patterned furnishings. A narrow band of scrolling motifs encircles the shoulder. The glaze is bright and even, with light speckling visible on the surface. The underside is unglazed at the footring, revealing a pale buff body with scattered kiln grit and fine concentric turning marks across the recessed base. Censers of this form served as vessels for burning incense during domestic, scholarly, and ritual practices, the rounded body allowing the even dispersal of heat and fragrance.
