A JAPANESE SATSUMA TRIPOD KORO, SIGNED RYOKUZAN, MEIJI PERIOD, (1868-1912) Of rounded baluster form supported on three gently splayed legs, the koro is finely decorated in polychrome enamels and gilt over a warm, cream-toned crackled glaze. The exterior presents continuous landscape scenes with figures on bridges and riverbanks, painted in delicate detail with soft greens, reds, and blues, framed above and below by dense gilt brocade bands. The shoulders bear repeated fan motifs picked out in raised gilt, while the loop handles are moulded and enriched with spiralling gilt patterns. The domed cover is similarly decorated and surmounted by a pomegranate finial executed in red and gilt. The surface shows light age-related crazing characteristic of Satsuma ware. The underside reveals the three-leg construction and a clear gilt seal reading Ryokuzan, set within the unglazed, cream-coloured footring. Satsuma incense burners (koro) of this type were used in domestic and temple settings for the burning of incense during ritual observance or for perfuming interiors, their elaborate decoration reflecting the high level of craftsmanship developed during the Meiji period. Measurements: Height 19.5 cm; Length 17 cm
