A PAIR OF CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL ‘QUAIL’ FIGURES 18th Century Modelled as a matched pair of quail standing alert on slender, gilt-bronze legs, each figure is formed from a copper core worked in fine cloisonné enamel. The bodies are decorated with dense overlapping feather motifs in tones of turquoise, cobalt, white, aubergine, and yellow, outlined throughout in gilt wires. The rounded backs show brightly coloured flight feathers rendered in scalloped panels, while the breasts are finished in graduated white and pale blue scales. Each bird has a small open beak, circular enamelled eyes, and a smoothly polished surface with light wear to exposed gilding. Cloisonné bird figures of this type served as decorative ornaments within elite domestic interiors, their bright palette and meticulous featherwork reflecting the technical refinement of Qing enamel workshops.
