AN UNUSUAL WHITE-GLAZED TRIPOD CENSER, YUAN/EARLY MING, 14TH/15TH CENTURY Modelled in buff clay and covered in an ivory-toned glaze, the censer is formed with a rounded body rising from three splayed legs. The short neck supports a gently everted rim, while a pair of upright loop handles is set high on the shoulder. The glaze pools lightly around the legs and handle junctions, revealing faint speckling and minor firing tones. The interior shows concentric wheel marks beneath a thin wash. The underside is unglazed, exposing the coarse, granular biscuit with a central circular scar remaining from firing. Tripod censers of this type, inspired by ancient bronze ding, were used for burning incense within domestic, scholarly, and temple settings, the rising aroma forming part of Buddhist, Daoist, and literati practices.
