A CHINESE WUCAI DRAGON CENSER Kangxi Period, 1662–1722 The censer is formed with a rounded, slightly compressed body set on a short, tapering foot and finished with an everted rim. It is decorated in wucai enamels over a clear glaze, featuring two striding dragons—one green and one yellow—pursuing flaming pearls amidst iron-red, green, blue, and aubergine cloud scrolls. Additional blue-enamelled mountain motifs encircle the lower register. The glaze shows characteristic firing speckles across the surface, and the enamels remain bright and well defined. The interior is plain and glazed, while the unglazed base reveals a light buff ceramic body with minor firing imperfections and traces of kiln grit adhering around the foot.Censers of this type were used for burning incense during ritual, domestic, and scholarly practices, with dragon motifs expressing imperial authority and cosmic protection within the Kangxi visual repertoire.
