A LARGE CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE JARDINIÈRE, 18TH/19TH CENTURY Robustly potted with deep, rounded sides rising to a thick, everted rim, this substantial jardinière possesses an impressive sculptural presence. The broad, gently swelling body is balanced upon a neatly cut foot, the proportions at once generous and harmonious. Its luminous white ground provides a serene field for the vibrant famille rose enamels, the surface animated yet controlled in composition. Encircling the exterior is a richly detailed garden scene, painted in finely shaded enamels of rose-pink, coral, turquoise, jade-green and soft aubergine. Branches of flowering peony and prunus extend laterally across the curved surface, their blossoms rendered in full, layered petals with subtle tonal gradations. Among the foliage, brightly coloured birds perch upon rockwork and twisted boughs, their plumage meticulously scaled and feathered in delicate strokes. Butterflies flutter between sprays of flowers, enhancing the sense of animation and seasonal vitality. Above, a narrow band of pink diaper ornament, edged with slender lines of yellow and underglaze blue, encircles the rim, lending formal definition and decorative refinement. The interior is glazed in a pale celadon-tinged wash, pooling softly towards the base and contrasting gently with the vivid exterior decoration. The footrim is left unglazed, revealing the buff-toned porcelain body beneath.
