A VERY RARE ARCHAIC BRONZE RITUAL FOOD TRIPOD VESSEL, LI EASTERN ZHOU DYNASTY, 4TH-3RD CENTURY BC Cast in bronze with a thick, rounded body supported on three splayed, columnar legs, this tripod vessel displays a mottled surface of green, blue, and earthen accretions from long burial. The wide, everted rim flares gently above the compressed shoulder, its edge softened by corrosion and minor losses. The body shows extensive encrustation, mineral deposits, and fissuring, with areas of cuprite and malachite patination visible throughout. The legs retain their original stout form, though heavily patinated, each terminating in a slightly flattened foot. The underside is plain and heavily encrusted, the circular base showing deep burial patina and soil adhesion. The interior is similarly coated with mineral accretions, with the seams of the cast faintly visible beneath the patina. Tripod vessels of the li type were used during the Eastern Zhou period as ritual food containers, distinguished by their rounded, pouch-like bodies and three evenly spaced legs. Such vessels formed part of ancestral offerings in elite ritual practice, their forms carrying both functional and ceremonial significance within the evolving bronze repertoire of the late Zhou period.
