A PAIR OF CHINESE WUCAI FIGURAL GU BEAKER VASES Shunzhi Period, 1644–1661 Each porcelain gu-shaped vase is decorated in wucai enamels on a white ground, the tall flaring upper registers painted with lively figure scenes set within rocky landscapes, with swirling cloud motifs rendered in iron-red. The mid-sections are bulbous and encircled by dense clusters of multicoloured peony blossoms in red, blue, green, and yellow, while the lower tapered sections continue the floral theme with pendant branches and further blooms. The enamels appear bright and fluid, with visible kiln speckling and light surface irregularities typical of the period. The flat, unglazed bases show a pale buff ceramic body with scattered firing marks and wear from age and use. Gu vases of this form were traditionally used for the display of flowers or as altar furnishings, their tall proportions and tiered profiles echoing ancient bronze prototypes while the wucai palette reflects the vivid decorative tastes of the early Qing court. Measurements: Height 38 cm Provenance: Property of a French Gentleman
