A PAIR OF FRENCH MOUNTS CHINESE BLUE & WHITE ROULEAU VASES, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) Each vase is formed in rouleau shape with a tall cylindrical neck, squared shoulders and a gently tapering body, painted in underglaze cobalt blue on a white ground. The bodies are divided into vertical panels enclosing arrangements of vases, stands, and flowering branches, executed in varied tonal washes of blue. The necks bear horizontal bands of geometric and foliate ornament. Both vessels are fitted with later French gilt-metal mounts at the rims and bases, cast with openwork scroll motifs and finished with bright gilding. The glaze shows minor surface accumulation and firing speckling typical of Qing porcelain. The undersides reveal unglazed footrims within the gilt-metal bases, each base retaining traces of firing grit. The recessed centres show neatly written underglaze-blue characters. Vases of this form were used decoratively within domestic interiors, the tall cylindrical profile suited to displaying cut branches or standing in pairs on scholar’s tables or cabinets. The later European mounts reflect the long history of Qing porcelain being adapted to Western taste. Measurements: Height 40 cm
