A PAIR OF CHINESE BLUE & WHITE JARS & COVERS, KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722) Each jar is potted with a rounded ovoid body rising to a short neck and fitted with a flat, straight-sided cover. The exterior is decorated in tones of cobalt blue with large quatrefoil cartouches enclosing still-life arrangements of vessels and auspicious objects, reserved against a dense ground of prunus blossoms on a deep blue wash. The glaze is glossy, with minor firing speckles visible across the surface. The covers repeat the prunus ground and cartouche motif in matching palette and style. The unglazed bases show the pale buff body material with traces of firing residue. The recessed foot rims reveal the typical Kangxi period wheel marks. The undersides of the covers are plain, each with a narrow unglazed rim. Jars of this form and decoration were commonly used for the storage of tea, spices, or other household substances. The depiction of auspicious objects in cartouches reflects long-established symbolic themes in Qing porcelain design. Measurements: Height 24 cm
