A CHINESE WUCAI PHEASANT GU BEAKER VASE, SHUNZHI (1644-1661) Finely potted in the tall, trumpet-mouthed gu form, the vase is decorated in wucai enamels on a clear glaze. The upper section shows a lively scene of pheasants among flowering peonies and tall grasses, rendered in iron-red, yellow, aubergine, and underglaze blue. The central globular register is painted with dense clusters of red and blue blossoms on leafy stems, while the lower flaring section is encircled with further boldly enamelled peony sprays. The surface exhibits scattered firing speckles, with the enamels applied in a bright yet softly blended palette characteristic of the period. The base is unglazed, revealing a coarse buff body with kiln grit adhering around the footrim. Gu-shaped vases of this type, derived from Bronze Age ritual prototypes, were used in domestic and altar settings, their tall flaring profile providing an elegant format for vibrant pictorial decoration. Measurements: Height 41 cm
