A BLANC DE CHINE FIGURINE OF A GUANYIN, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) The figure is modelled in white-glazed porcelain as Guanyin standing in a composed, frontal attitude, the body enveloped in long, flowing robes. The glaze is of smooth blanc de Chine type, with a soft, milky-white surface that emphasises the modelling of the drapery, the serene facial features and the finely arranged hair beneath the hooded mantle. The deity’s hands are concealed within the gathered folds of the robe, a gesture that enhances the sense of inward contemplation and spiritual restraint. The face is delicately rendered, with downcast eyes, a small mouth and a calm expression, while the hair is drawn into a high arrangement beneath the veil, with beaded and cloud-like details at the brow. The figure stands upon a raised base of swirling waves, a traditional setting associated with Guanyin’s salvific presence and her connection with the Southern Sea. The sculptural treatment of the base provides movement and contrast to the quiet verticality of the figure, while the robe falls in deep, rounded folds that demonstrate the plastic qualities of Dehua porcelain. Blanc de Chine figures of Guanyin were among the most admired devotional porcelains produced in China, valued both for religious use and for export. The uncoloured white glaze allowed form, surface and iconography to carry the devotional meaning, presenting the bodhisattva as an image of purity, compassion and meditative grace.
