A LARGE CHINESE CREAM GROUND TEXTILE, 18TH CENTURY, YONGZHENG (1723-1735) The textile is formed as a large rectangular hanging or panel, centred by a cream-gold ground section woven with a subtle patterned surface and bordered by contrasting bands of blue, green and darker textile. The composition is backed with a coarser brown fabric, with a red upper section visible to the reverse, suggesting its former use as a lined, mounted or suspended textile rather than a simple flat fragment. The central decoration is embroidered with a large basket or jardinière of flowers, worked in coloured silk and gold thread. Peony, lotus and other flowering stems rise from the vessel, with scrolling handles, tasselled details and finely described outlines creating a sense of ceremonial richness. Smaller related floral basket motifs appear at the corners, establishing a balanced and formal arrangement across the cream ground. To one side is an attached embroidered border panel on a warmer ochre ground, decorated with small figures, scrolling forms, flowers and auspicious motifs. This is framed by narrow patterned bands and a blue outer border with angular fretwork and embroidered ornament. The combination of figural, floral and geometric elements gives the textile a layered decorative character, suggesting that it may preserve elements from a larger furnishing, hanging or ceremonial textile ensemble. The imagery belongs to the auspicious visual language of Qing dynasty textile design, in which flowering baskets, lotus, peony and scrolling ornament conveyed ideas of abundance, refinement and prosperity. The Yongzheng period was noted for elegant, carefully balanced decorative schemes, and the textile’s cream ground, restrained central arrangement and delicate polychrome embroidery accord with that taste for refinement and controlled ornament. A large and decorative eighteenth-century Chinese textile of Yongzheng date, notable for its cream-gold ground, embroidered floral basket design, coloured borders and surviving lined construction, preserving both the splendour and the fragmentary material history of Qing dynasty textile production.
