A FAMILLE ROSE CELADON-GROUND 'BLOSSOM' DISH, QIANLONG (1736-1795) The dish is finely potted with a shallow rounded well and gently rising sides, the surface covered in a soft celadon-green glaze that provides a luminous ground for the enamelled decoration. The rim is edged with a narrow gilt or iron-toned line, while the underside is similarly glazed in pale celadon around a recessed white base bearing a blue seal mark. The interior is delicately painted in famille rose enamels with flowering branches arranged asymmetrically across the lower portion of the well. Pink and white blossoms spring from slender brown stems, with green leaves and fine tendrils extending across the celadon field. The restrained placement of the design leaves much of the ground open, giving the composition an elegant sense of balance and quiet refinement. The reverse continues the decorative scheme with flowering prunus branches in pink and white, their dark stems curving around the underside of the dish. This continuation of the blossom motif beyond the principal surface reflects the careful attention given to the object as a whole, with decoration conceived to reward viewing from multiple angles. Blossom decoration on Qing porcelain carries associations of renewal, purity and cultivated taste, particularly when set against a celadon ground whose subdued tone recalls earlier Chinese ceramic traditions. In the Qianlong period, such pieces often combined technically refined potting, subtle monochrome grounds and carefully controlled famille rose enamelling, producing wares of both decorative richness and scholarly restraint.
