A FAMILLE ROSE CELADON-GROUND 'QUAILS' DISH, QIANLONG (1736-1795) The dish is finely potted with a shallow rounded well and broad rim, covered to the interior with a soft celadon-green ground. The reverse is similarly glazed in a pale celadon tone around a white recessed base, which bears a blue seal mark. A narrow gilt or iron-toned line defines the rim, lending the form a restrained and elegant finish. The interior is enamelled in famille rose colours with a pair of quails among flowering plants and pierced blue rockwork. Pink and white chrysanthemums rise to either side, accompanied by green foliage and grasses, the composition set against the luminous celadon ground. The birds are delicately picked out in fine brown and ochre line, one perched low near the rock and the other standing above, creating a balanced garden scene of quiet animation. Above the decoration is an inscription in black enamel, accompanied by small iron-red seals, integrating calligraphy with the pictorial scheme. The combination of poem, seal, bird, flower and rock evokes the refined language of Chinese literati painting, translated here into porcelain through the brilliant enamels and technically controlled surface associated with the Qianlong period. Quails, often read as auspicious emblems, are particularly suited to decorative compositions with chrysanthemums and rocks, where they suggest peace, autumnal abundance and cultured ease. The celadon ground provides a subtle contrast to the bright famille rose palette, allowing the flowers, birds and blue rockwork to stand forward while preserving an overall sense of delicacy.
