MIYAO EISUKE: A GILT-DECORATED BRONZE FIGURE OF A MAN, 19TH CENTURY The bronze figure is finely modelled as a Japanese man in lively motion, poised on one foot upon a rectangular lacquered wood stand with shaped legs and gilt scrolling ornament. His head is turned slightly, one hand raised and the other holding a small implement or fan-like object, the animated posture giving the work a distinctly theatrical and narrative presence. The figure is patinated in rich brown tones and lavishly heightened with gilding. His robes are decorated with chrysanthemums, flowing water motifs, maple leaves, roundels, tasselled ornaments and other textile-inspired devices, the gilt details set in strong contrast against the dark bronze ground. The surface work is particularly elaborate across the sleeves, sash and voluminous trousers, where chased and incised passages create a sense of layered fabric and movement. The modelling of the face, hands and coiffure displays the refined naturalism associated with high-quality Meiji-period bronze sculpture. The man’s expression is alert and expressive, with carefully defined brows, eyes and mouth, while the hair is rendered with fine incised striations.
