ATTRIBUTED TO MIYAO EISUKE: A GILT-DECORATED BRONZE FIGURE OF A MAN, 19TH CENTURY The bronze figure is modelled as a Japanese man in animated, slightly crouched movement, standing upon an integral rocky base. His body twists forward, one hand drawn close to the torso and the other lowered, producing a lively sense of narrative action characteristic of finely observed Meiji-period figural sculpture. The surface is worked in a deep brown patina, enriched with extensive gilt decoration. The garments are ornamented with roundels, fan-like chrysanthemum devices, stylised foliate motifs and patterned borders, while the sleeves and underlayers are treated with contrasting stippled and textured passages. The gilt sash, collar and garment details create a strong visual rhythm across the dark bronze ground. Close inspection reveals the care given to the modelling of the face, hair and hands. The expression is alert and theatrical, with sharply defined eyes, brows and mouth, while the coiffure and headband are finely incised. The costume includes hanging accoutrements and layered drapery, each element cast and chased to enhance the impression of movement. Attributed to Miyao Eisuke, the figure belongs to the refined tradition of late 19th-century Japanese export bronzes, in which genre subjects, performers and warriors were presented with exceptional technical finish. The combination of naturalistic stance, rich gilding and elaborate textile-inspired ornament is consistent with the decorative splendour associated with the Miyao workshop.
