MIYAO EISUKE: A GILT-DECORATED BRONZE FIGURE OF AN ARCHER, 19TH CENTURY The figure is cast as an archer in a dynamic kneeling pose, his body twisting as he draws a long bow and aims an arrow with taut concentration. The composition is highly theatrical, with one leg extended, the other bent beneath him, and the arms set in a strong diagonal that emphasises both movement and tension. The bronze is finished with a rich brown patina and extensive gilt decoration. The archer’s armour and clothing are elaborately detailed with gilt roundels, wheel-like emblems, formalised flames, geometric devices and patterned textile borders, while darker textured passages provide contrast to the polished surfaces of the limbs and face. Particular attention is given to the head and hair, including the formal headdress and finely incised coiffure. The close-up views reveal the crispness of the gilt ornament and the signature tablet reading Miyao, placed prominently on the lower garment. Miyao Eisuke was celebrated for finely worked Meiji-period bronze figures, often depicting warriors, craftsmen, entertainers and historical characters with exceptional surface finish. This archer belongs to that tradition, combining martial subject matter with sumptuous decorative treatment intended for display.
